Ghana vs Uruguay Line-ups and Score Predictions, Group H Final Match

The match between Ghana and Uruguay in the final match of the 2022 World Cup group stage on Friday, December 2, was already hot before the match took place. There is a revenge mission coloring the preparation of the Black Stars team ahead of the match.

This duel will be their first meeting after the two teams faced off in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in South Africa 12 years ago. In that match, there was a Luis Suarez  handball incident that will always live on in the memories of the Ghanaians.

The incident occurred in extra time, when the two teams drew in normal time, after the two teams exchanged goals from Sulley Muntari and Diego Forlan.

Black Stars goal opportunity that came in the final minute of extra time. At that time, there was chaos in front of Uruguay's goal. Dominic Adiyah made a header which goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was unable to block. However, Suarez, who was on the goal line, blocked the ball with his hands.

The referee then punished Suarez with a red card for the incident and awarded a penalty kick to Ghana. However, Asamoah Gyan, who became the executor, failed to carry out his duties. Suarez, who walked into the locker room, immediately celebrated.

The score remained a draw until the winner was decided on penalties which Uruguay won to advance to the semifinals. Since then, Suarez has been regarded as an "enemy" and even called a "devil" by the people of Ghana.

Ghana forward Andre Ayew, the only player remaining in the squad from that match, realized that Suarez's handball incident was a hot topic among the players in his team. However, he insisted that the match in Qatar was not about revenge.

"I'm the only one left in the squad since that incident. Everyone knows how we feel. Everyone feels bad, but for me, I just want to qualify for the next stage of this World Cup," he said this week.

"It's not about revenge. Whether there is or not, we will fight with the same determination and the same desire to win because we want to reach the next stage."

"I don't think Ghana has forgiven Luis Suarez. But for me, this is football. He made a decision. There is nothing to talk about."

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey added: "History is always there. Everyone was very sad back then. It was very difficult. This is a new generation. We have another chance and we have to forget what happened. This is a new era."

Despite what happened 12 years ago at the African World Cup, Ghana must win to avoid an early exit from this tournament. A draw could have made them qualify for the last 16 to accompany Portugal who have already made sure of the knockout stages with the two wins they have won.

However, even getting one point requires a tough struggle from this West African team because the three teams from Group H still have the chance to qualify for the last 16.

Uruguay is also required to win this fight. However, to be able to do so, Uruguay must polish itself again after performing poorly in two matches, which saw them draw 0-0 to South Korea and defeated Portugal 2-0.

The aging striker duo, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, as well as the young star Darwin Nunez on the front lines, are still having trouble finding the net in two matches.

Coach Diego Alonso must choose whether to continue playing the three strikers or overhaul the team. Young players Facundo Pellistri and Maxi Gomez who performed brilliantly for Uruguay were able to enter from the early minutes.

If Ghana plays to get a draw, then they will depend on the South Korea vs Portugal match in another Group H party. Even though Korea is a team known for having high fighting spirit. This was evident when they came back from two goals down against Ghana before losing 2-3.

Victory over Uruguay could also be their chance to avenge their defeat in the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup.

Ghana coach Otto Addo insists he doesn't want to dwell on the past. Instead he made sure his team did their best to stop Uruguay who were making their 14th World Cup appearance. He believes his team will win the final match of the Qatar World Cup group phase.

"They have a very good striker, very experienced and very compact, a very good team," said Otto Addo.

"Every game will be on the edge and we have to do our best to beat them," he said.

Uruguay has never been eliminated from the World Cup group stage in the last 20 years. Coach Diego Alonso knows his team will need something special to beat Ghana who have made the last 16 in two of their three appearances at World Cup finals.

Alonso emphasized that he believes in the abilities of his players, but must be wary of a team that knows Uruguay's strength and tries to stop him. "We will use all the weapons we have," he said. "We have to appear free. The team must be relaxed playing."
